Contact : Newsletter of Pilots for Christ InternationalJuly, 2001 “The Sky Pilot Said It”: Keepers of the Spring"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden." Matt. 5:13-14.” Once upon a time, in a tiny village, the local council hired an old man to protect a spring that flowed through the town. He did his job so well that it became a popular tourist attraction with graceful swans floating in the spring, and mill wheels turning along the riverbanks. One day the council decided to cut their budget, so they fired the old keeper of the spring. At first, nothing changed. But, gradually the water got darker, slime appeared along the banks and with it came a foul odor. Eventually the mill wheels ground to a halt, the swans and tourists left and the spring started looking like a swamp. Realizing their mistake, the council hired the old man back, and within a few weeks, the spring cleared up, the wheels began to turn again, the swans came back and brought with them the tourists. New life returned to the town. Peter Marshall, who first told this story, said, "What the keeper of the spring meant to the village, you and I mean to this world." Jesus said we are to be the salt that creates a thirst. We are to be the light that gives direction. If God was willing to spare Sodom for only ten righteous people, then your influence as a child of God can extend His blessing and withhold judgment from this generation. What a calling. Today you are a keeper of the spring. Pastor Jerry Poff, PCI Chaplain
